WSOR SD40 ?'s
Posted by CCRM on Saturday, February 21, 2009 8:42 AM
Hi, I am modeling the Wisconsin & Southern for Microsoft Train Simulator. I was wondering if anybody knew what Phases (I, II or III) the locomotives are in. I would suspect they are not all the same coming from many different roads. Also what is the difference between a SD40-2 and a SD40M-2. The only visible difference I can find is that the ditch lights are mounted above the deck.

The SD40M-2 usually indicates a older SD40 rebuilt to SD40-2 specifications. So it would likely have the older Flexicoil trucks, rather than the newer HTC trucks.

They are pretty much all different.  This will help:

4007, 4008, 4011, 4050 & 4051 have corrugated radiator grills.  4011 also has the late model bulge for the exhaust silencer.  4007-08 have been retrofitted with ratchet handbrakes, and the snoot noses have been shortened.

The SD40M-2s are straight SD40s, with new Dash-2 electrical cabinets.

Make sure you get the paint on the roof correct.

The air horns are all different.  Some K5LA, P3, S-3L, K3, RS3L, S5, and one 5-chime Prime, until it got stolt one weekend.  Look at pictures.  The 101 has the M3, the 103 has something else, K3 maybe.
