GP38-2
Posted by southernalco on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 11:26 AM

When did EMD switch from the  81" to the 88"  nose on the GP38-2's?  Also, looking at a few pictures of the first 9 Southern GP38-2's they seem to share the same carbody / radiator / fan spacing as the earlier GP38 and GP38AC's.  Can anyone advise.

Thanks,

 SouthernAlco

Jane's World Railways books from the 1970's and 1980's are one source for that sort of builder information. They could be found using Library Loan programs.

Since EMD changed to 88" noses on the SD40-2 in December 1976, it would be reasonable to say that the change to 88" noses happened about the same time on all their models.

Pretty much.. Oddly if you weren't told about this you don't particularly notice that the size is different.  Now the "Snoot" nose models are a different story.

Very early production GP38-2s had the same radiators and body style as the GP38, then quickly moved to the single radiators.
