How do they syncronize locomotives

Thanks, Big Jim. The answer's a pain to type, but it's informative and I understand something that's bugged me for a long time- ever since I got O. Winston Link's book "The Last Steam Railroad in America", which showed pretty dramatically the pusher operations of a Y6 articulated steam locomotive. (There is a rumor that got started somewhere that the train Link shot ended up as a runaway- which must have been really interesting, if true.)
