Conrail GP10
Posted by Murphy Siding on Sunday, May 11, 2008 7:21 PM
This month's Trains Magazine has a picture of a shortline locomotive calling it a former Conrail GP10.  What exactly is that?

Weird, in that I've never heard of a GP10, but maybe that's just me?

Illinois Central (Gulf) rebuilt a lot of their GP7 and GP9 locomotives into GP8 and GP10s, this was their name for them and not EMD's. The program continued, with IC upgrading locomotives for other railroads. The Milwaukee Road had a similar program.

Gettysburg 107 began as PRR 7005.

Yeah, it's a rebuild program thing. Pretty standard.

Conrail called any of their contract-shop rebuilt GP9s, GP10s.  IC did some as did RI Silvis shop.  The RI units did not get chopped noses, yet still were called GP10s by Conrail.

Did IC rebuild some GP9"s for PRR, or did they come from another railroad?

PRR 7005 became PC 7005, then Conrail 7005, then IC rebuilt it into a GP10 for Conrail.

You might see the IC rebuilds called Paducah rebuilds in literature as that is where the rebuilding was done. IC's Paducah shops.
