First units painted in Mega Merger schemes
Posted by CaptainChuck on Saturday, May 10, 2008 4:25 PM

Hey guys. I was wondering if people have pictures of units that were the "first" unit painted in the paint scheme of a mega merger railroad. For example what was the First Conrail unit or the first CSX or Burlington Northern unit. I know a few of these RR's went through experimental paint schemes so that would be cool to see too. Any info would help greatly. I'll start off with the first Guilford painted unit being GP9r 470,

The first Conrail unit was GP40 3091, painted in Cleveland, May 20, 1976.

The first Kodachromes were SF SD45 5394 at San Bernardino, July 31 1985 and SP SD45 7551, which visited CSRM on August 11.

That's the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe merger paint scheme. Back in 1983, SP and SF planned to merge and started painting locos in anticipation, but the Interstate Commerce Commision (ICC, now known as the STB or Surface Transportation Board) Nixed the merger. So the two railroads were all dressed up with nowhere to go. You can still see a handful of engines in this failed scheme.

Foamers/Railfans call it the KodaChrome scheme.

Some fans joke that SPSF stands for "Shouldn't Paint So Fast"

Here's a wikipedia article on it

The first units in BN paint, were the 6 GP38's ordered by the SP&S, but delivered to the BN. They were ordered as SP&S #'s 200-205 but were delivered as BN #'s 2072-2077 in Feb 1970.

The 'first' BN repaints were 9942/9943(E8A's) - They lead #25(combined TCZ/EB/NCL) out of Chicago on merger day in 1970.  The 'first' delivered new engines were 5 EMD GP38's on a road freight.  These were ordered for SP&S and delivered in 'Cascade' green for the new Burlington Northern.

Back in the failed merger attempt, the CB&Q had a GP40 delivered in an experimental green paint scheme.  The BN logo was quickly painted out after the courts nixed the merger attempt.  The CB&Q did receive SD45 and U23C engines in that pre-merger 'Hockey Stick' paint scheme(sans the BN logo) later in 1968/1969.

The white stripe on the SD45's and U23C's was later narrowed and found only on passenger power, specifically the E8/E9's in suburban service.

Paul,

The white stripes on these 'pre-merger' engines were sort of a winged chevron(and narrower).  They had a 'V' in the center and went outward and up.  The standard stripes on everything else after 1970 was the 'same direction' broad stripes(E's, F's, switchers, & road units).  There were several 'one off' switcher paint jobs(ex-CB&Q).    This basic scheme stayed in fashion until the 'Tiger Stripe' scheme(GP50's and commuter E's).  All of this was eventually replaced by the 'white face' version of the Cascade Green scheme.
