L&N Loco
Posted by zapp on Sunday, January 13, 2008 11:11 AM
I'm trying to find information/ pictures on L&N locomotives. What would be about the timeframe when all L&N units would be in Family Lines/ CSX paint? And what they looked like at that point. Thank You.

zapp Seaboard Coastline Industries gained control of all of L&N's common stock in 1972, the Family Lines system consisted of five roads: SCL, L&N, Clinchfield, Georgia, and the two West Point Route roads (Atlanta & West Point and the Western Railway of Alabama). Each road kept it's identity and operated under the Family Lines banner until Jan. 1, 1983 when they were merged into the Seaboard System Railroad. It only lasted until late 1985 when Chessie and the Seaboard System combined into CSX Transportation. Louisville & Nashville Diesel Locomotives by Charles Castner, Ron Flanery and Lee Gordon is a good source of info. The first units to wear the Family Lines scheme were a group of SD40-2s in 1977 and the last unit to leave the paint shop with the L&N logo was in late 1982. Here is another site you can try http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ln/ln-eng.html for photos of L&N locos. The L&N RR Historical Society http://www.lnrr.org/ can also help with books and back issues of thier magazine.

Thank you for your responces. You've made a huge impact on the era that I will model. I was leaning on late 70's but since I will be able to model all the "Family Lines" paint schemes I think I'll move that up to the early/ mid. 80's.
