Preserving Railroad uniforms
Posted by Randy Stahl on Monday, September 18, 2017 3:08 PM

I have a conductors uniform from the North Shore line. It was owned by Henry Schmaal and I think it dates to about 1917. Im looking for tip on who can restore it and how to keep it. Now it is put away in a suitcase.

Smithosonian has some info on conservation/storage:  https://www.si.edu/mci/english/learn_more/taking_care/texrep.html

From there, a list of conservators:  http://www.conservation-us.org/

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

I just had on online appraisel done and its worth A LOT more than I thought. I bought in 1980 for 20 bucks. Now it may be worth 5 grand.

Now I gotta find someone to repair and clean it.

Hi Randy, that sounds like a cool find.  I have nothing of my grandpa's Frisco conductor uniform, except his coal oil lantern.  My cousin has his watch, given to her dad, the only son.  Mary Stahl
