844 update
Posted by Overmod on Monday, July 11, 2016 9:07 PM

Surprised no one has commented here, especially since Trains Magazine apparently had someone doing streaming video...

844 was supposedly doing a shakedown cruise to Greeley last week, but encountered what were described as air system and cab-signal issues, so the trip was called off.  But how long can those things take to fix?

It looks as if we might just have her on the Cheyenne Frontier Days special this year ... won't THAT be good!

Too close.  Less than 9 days till it has to be 100% ready to pull a important public trip.  Still hasn't been a break in run to sort out any issues.   The last planned break in run was scrubbed a few days ago.

I hope it runs like a Swiss watch for years to come!

For another bonus, here's a video of the presentation made by UP Steam Manager Ed Dickens to the Cheyenne Frontier Days train guests.

It goes into some good detail on what it takes to refurbish a steam locomotive properly. The amount of precision work required is mind blowing. No wonder that steam power was phased out quickly when diesel electric locos became cost effective.
