Caboose Question
Posted by pajrr on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 9:52 AM

Hi, I am involved with a small railroad museum. We have a 1929 wooden caboose from the Erie RR. The caboose has Bettendorf trucks. One end of the side frame is marked ERIE (the owner of the caboose). The other end of the side frame has ARA-29. Assuming the "29" is the year built, what does the "ARA" stand for? Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

If my memory is right, ARA was the American Railway Association, a predecessor of the AAR.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

You've got a VERY rare piece there.  Is the car available to be seen?  Where?

The caboose is at the Old Station Museum in Mahwah, NJ. It is open for public visits. Click on the link below.

When I'm back in Paramus again I'm going to try and make the effort so see your museum.  You know how it is, so much to do, so little time.

Did they call 'em "Hacks" in north Jersey? Or was that strictly in the land of Pineys and tomato farms?
