That is a terrific slide show of 844 on Donner!

Up was apparently taking no chances of a problem there with 3 additional Diesels for back op power.

Thanks for sharing it here!.  Cool

Thanks for the comment.     The three diesels are protection for tunnel 41.  In the past years, the diesels have gone off line and the 3985 had to pull the train up hill in the two mile long tunnel.  The story about that incident roported the cab temperature on the locomotive was extremely high.  This time, they stopped at the east end for 10 minutes and everyone except the normal crew with breathing devices stayed on the 844.

Normally, one unit would be sufficient to assist on the 1.9 grade at Andover but if it went off line, the 844 could not have pulled the train up hill in the long tunnel.

Lovely, CZ.  You have a really good camera, clearly, and know where and how to get the good shots.  I envy you your circumstances to be able to drive a ways and then spend a bit of an afternoon setting up for this shoot.

Thanks.  I really enjoyed the day starting at Sparks around 7:30, which means I woke up about 4 AM to get there.  It was worth it and this Thursday, the 844 goes back east over the Hill so there are a few more pictures to post.  There were so many of us on the Hill on Thursday that it was standing room only at a few spots.

Many thanks to the Union Pacific for running the steam program and coming to Sacramento for their Union Pacific 150th anniversary celebration.   The sound of the steamboat whistle in the mountains was unmatched by any other machine man has built.

The Union Pacifc ran the 844 back east over Donner on October 4th.  This makes it the second time in one week the 844 was on Donner pass.     I added some pictures from yesterday to the trip over Donner.

Enjoy
