Well, on the Union Pacific their 4-8-4's got bumped to freight traffic when the diesels began showing up.  Ironically, that's when the UP found out how good they really were!

I'd definitely guess so ...

At least with Diesels being introduced on the property ,

steam locos more and more got pushed into freight to do or die .
