I will be visiting Ely, Nv in September for a coulple of days. Do any of you folks have suggestions or can share your experiences?
It is the NEVADA NORTHERN, not the Northern Nevada in Ely. I went in 2007 and did the "Engineer For a Day" rental Program, ran the #40 Ten Wheeler and the #204 SD9. It was a Great experience that I would reccomend, if it fits the budget.
I had a busy weekend, and am looking at an early Monday morning, I will try to post some pics and more about the NNRy soon.

May your flanges always stay BETWEEN the rails
Just as challenger3980 recommends, if you can budget it, sign up to drive the locomotives!
In 2005, I got to run #93 (an Alco 2-8-0) and an Alco diesel roadswitcher. Good times!
Here's a video I put together from my 2012 visit to the Nevada Northern Railway museum, featuring 4-6-0 #40 in action:

While you're in eastern Nevada, there are some interesting ghost towns, mines and historic sites you might like to visit. North of Ely you could visit McGill and Cherry Creek:

All of these sites are easily accessible by a regular, two-wheel-drive car.
