Saw NKP 765 in tandem with NS Heritage NKP ES44AC deadheading with the NS excursion train from Bellevue, Ohio to Portsmouth, Ohio on July 30th.  The train stopped for water in Ashville, just south of Columbus.  The whole village came to a standstill.  Streets were blocked ahead of time and hundreds of spectators turned out to see 765.

Don’t want to bet the farm on this, but I counted 19 cars.  I overheard a crew member tell a spectator that 765 was the principle locomotive pulling but the ES44AC was helping to cut down on coal and water usage and wear and tear on 765.

On August 6th, 765 deadheading from Portsmouth to Pittsburg laid over at Columbus and today, the 7th  , is on the NS, old Pennsy Pittsburgh to Chicago, line deadheading from Crestline to Pittsburgh.

When a steam locomotive has finished her work on an excursion, most of the time she is allowed to lead on the ferry move. With the last few excursions with the NKP 765 here in Ohio. The 765 led the ferry move from Bellevue to Toledo on the monday after the excursion; the engine was still hot and then could be shut down when they arrived. Same on the next week when they went to Williamson, W. Va from Toledo, she led( the8100 was second engine, mostly as a protect unit) Years ago when I helped the steam program of the 80's and 90's the 611 and 1218 also travelled as lead units on ferry moves Some railroads do not allow steam to run by themselves and tag on a diesel as lead unit. hope this helps out.

When they say ferry do they mean its going to pulled there by diesels or will it be powered an empty train?

NS steam excursions
Posted by oltmannd on Friday, May 18, 2012 12:33 PM

NS will be running steam excursions for employees this summer every weekend starting the first weekend in June.  SOU 630 from the TVRM will cover the south end of the system.  NKP 765 will cover the north end.  Each weekend will feature a different division. Should be interesting....
