New Owner for J611
Posted by Beach Bill on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 8:29 AM

NW J611 and A1218 have been owned by the City of Roanoke, Virginia.  Ownership is being transferred to the Virginia Musuem of Transportation.  The article also mentions that the re-paint is done on the Bicentennial NW SD, so hopefully it will be back in the public view soon.

I doubt that this will have any bearing on such options.  I worked for the City of Roanoke for 30+ years and this is likely just an accounting maneuver as they compared value vs liability.  It is time for finalizing the annual City budget for the next fiscal year, and they likely just saw fit to remove these items from the City's roster and concern.  The Virginia Museum of Transportation is not a strong financial entity, either.  As with many RR museums, they struggle just to try to keep up with the rust.  Bev Fitzpatrick, who tends to things at the musuem is a good manager and fully recognizes the value and importance of the J and the A, but that doesn't alter the budget that he has to work with.
