Leviathan, a replica of an 1868 Central Pacific 4-4-0 of that name, will be running at Illinois Railway Museum on the following dates;

August 7th, 13th, 14th, September 3rd, 4th, 5th, 17th and 18th.

This is the first time EVER that Leviathan will be pulling coaches with passengers.  It was unable to do so on previous outings due to a lack of compatible coupling hardware and brakes.

Illinois Railway Museum is the largest railway museum in the United States, and is in Union IL, about 50 miles NW from Chicago.  Directions are on the web site.

Please pass this on anywhere you post that railfans can be found!

Was out today and they were running Leviathan but they had some sort of coupler problem and did not pull coaches.

I looked at what they had arranged, and they have a knuckle coupler the draw of which was slotted to fit into the link and pin coupler socket.  But the knuckle was removed from it most of the day and I assume that was the sore point.

Here is  a shot of the Leviathan from 2009 Train Festival

Leviathan

 It would be great to actually this locomotive in action pulling some coaches.  It is a beautiful locomotive to see.

I found out that it was an air compressor problem, not an issue with the new coupler, that prevented Leviathan from pulling coaches yesterday.  Sorry for the misinformation.

I am told that it pulled a coach train this last weekend, so it is quite likely that it will do so on subsequent outings.

This is a photo of the engine's link & pin couplier.  It looks like it unbolts from the frame.  I'd be interested in anyone's photo of the engine with a Janney type installed.

It pulled two coaches most of the time.  Late on Sunday, it ran a few trips with 3 coaches, though I'm told with some difficulty (it was pulling steel coaches, not 19th century wooden ones).  It will probably run with two coaches the rest of its stay.

  I don't have a photo of the Janney coupler, but I know how it's installed.  The link & pin coupler pocket is not unbolted from the frame.  Rather the link & pin apparatus is used to secure a specially designed Janney coupler.  Basically, the pin is dropped through a pocket in the Janney coupler, and holds it in place the same way it would hold a link on a link & pin coupler.  The locomotive can then be coupled to cars with standard couplers.

To Falcon48:  One of the 19th Century steamers at the B&O Museum in Baltimore has a Janney coupler installed in exactly the manner you described.   I don't remember which one, but this goes to show you there's nothing new under the sun!
