Good Evening Everyone! I have a question for those who are in the know regarding the following. I am helping a person in England build a N&W "A" class locomotive for Microsoft Train Simulator. http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?297482-Started-modelling-again&p=1666601#post1666601 My question is does anyone have nice photos of the both ends and top of the water car used by N&W #1218 in 1987? I know it is from a L&N M1 and I have the dimnal data for the M1 as well. My problem is I need photos of the M1 tender as converted.
My second question is does anyone have the above data for water tender used behind the N&W J 611?
I must admit. How many water tenders did Sou, N&W, NS have in the steam program roster? And does anyone have photos of all of these mentioned tenders? I am probably in the minority here? But I find water cars do be of great interest while modeling steam locomotives.
Robert
N&W made regular use of auxiliary tenders in the steam era. In a TRAINS article some years back about L&N's M-1 2-8-4's, there is mention of a reference to N&W drawings in the design of the M-1 tenders.
It's sitting down there in the VMT just waiting for you to come and take pictures.
.
Jim, I appreciate the replies! However I live to far away to come down and take photos of it. Maybe someday? I also have reason to believe that the tender at VMT is not the orginal from 87? The water cars were switched around often. I found a photo that is suppose to be of the tender used in 87 sitting in Illinois on a siding rusting with a box car. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/sho...aspx?id=903877
What I am looking for is a roster of the tenders used on the steam excursions by Sou, N&W, NS?
I don't have their exact numbers but I think there were in the 250XX series of digits. The one in Indiana belongs to the group that has the 587. It was the one that had the tuscan stripe and rolled out behind the J in '82.
In mid-94, a tuscan colored, smooth side all-welded tank was used until the shut down. I think it was the same tank the 4501 used in 85, green at the time, but don't quote me on that. This tank ended up with Sandberg and the 261 after the Birmingham auctions.
The one is VMT is the one the J pulled the most the last few years and now sits with the A.
Regarding pics and such, from the one someone posted, you can see the metal roll up door in the area that had been the coal bunker. The water end of the car wasn't chagned much, maybe with the exception of a hand brake.
If you see any SR Steam shots of the 610 or 765, those are Emma tanks their before they took out the bunkers.

N&W used to run canteens on freights on the N&W Pulaski division (Roanoke - Bristol) whenever one or more of the enroute water tanks were out of service. Near the end of steam on that division ( Jan 1 1957) canteens were used on almost steam trains due to out of service water tanks. Diesels were used frequently leading up to the end of service day.

After 1/1/58, there was not as much pleasure in going to the station to watch trains as there had been prior to that date.

Robert:
This website might be an answer for you: http://www.nwhs.org/index.shtml
It is the site of the N&W Historical Society ( also for VGN RR stuff as well).
You might want to investigate it and post you questions about the Steam-era, extra water tenders. It would certainly be a good place to start asking specific N&W questions.
Good luck with your search!
I've found the following photos showing the auxiliary tenders on the "Fallen Flags" web site. All are dated from 1983 to 1990. The detail isn't great, but hopefully they will help:

So none of the auxillary tenders used were ex N&W aux. tenders? What the ones that were used in the days before the J and A?
There are some good pictures of one of them in this tread :

Southern as converted a long haul tender as a water bottle for the Steam Engine too.
Thankyou to everyone who has posted links and information on the water tenders. I will pass this along later today to the fellow in England who is doing the locomotive.
Now I have a new question? According the above link NKP 765 is going to use the N&W A tank #250001? If this is true does this mean that the A tank the 765 group has is broken down or something? Or will there be two water cars used for NKP 765?
Does anyone know where I can find a picture of 611's a-tank that was all tuscan red and had norfolk southern on the top edge? I am looking to make an HO model of it. Thanks
