Was very saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Purdy Chief Mechanic Steam. He was a fine gentleman and I was fortunate to have met him several times on outings with Southern and later Norfolk Southern R.R. One excursion he heard that a former student of mine was celebrating his 12th birthday by going on an outing with the #765. Mr Purdy let him ride in the cab for about a hundred miles. He will be sorely missed but, has my student friend (now 41) said but, not forgotten.
