Okay, this is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but sure to open a can of worms. For years, Harleys have been referred to as hogs and they've even formed an organization called "H.O.G." Yet, years ago, this was the common slang for a steam locomotive, most especially a freight engine. In Milwaukee, there is a Harley-Davidson museum, which is altogether fitting and proper. But across the street from it is the Iron Horse Hotel and somehow I'm not thinkin' that's a reference to trains. IIRC, "Easyriders" magazine has a subsidiary publication called "Iron Horse". Enough is enough! If you want to ride a leaky bucket of bolts and wear black and orange down to your underwear, have a grand time. But coin your own terms and lingo for what you do. Quit stealing ours!

SOOOOOOOOOO! Is this what you might paraphrase as a Railfan's "NIMBY" ?
MY guess is that those involved on both sides Harley aficionados and Railfans, alike have a pretty good idea of who's term and use is referring to their their particular AREA OF INTEREST.
THE FOLKS WHO NEED A LINE DRAWN, AND A PICTURE PAINTED ARE EITHER OFF THEIR MED'S; OR HAVE MISSED SEVERAL OF THEIR THERAPY SESSIONS. I Mean You can love a HOG w/ two (maybe three) wheels; AND still love a HOG with any number of steel wheels, too!
Here here! I agree! It is just like the cornpewter community usurping the TRADE MARKED name of a long standing (and quite delicious, in my opinion) food product as the name representing UnWanted Electronic Messages (or "UWEM").
I can understand a reluctance to indulge in Spam on religious grounds and possibly if you were well fed up with it in the military in WWII, but Spam is not useless e-mails. Spam is, of course, the Hormel Foods, Inc. canned Spiced Ham product.
But, complain as much as you want that Harley bikers have usurped the name "Hog", ya gotta remember, railroaders stole that term from FARMERS in the first place!

Harleys taking over Railfanning? Hmmmm...well lets see if thats true then a Harley rider and a railfan should be interchangable OK lets see, Say... whats the difference between a Railfan and a Hoover vacuum? FTL: "...Hawaii is the Spam capital of the USA, with almost 11,000 cans being consumed per day. Per day. Hawaii is just not that big either. That's a lot of Spam. Walk into the grocery store, and you'll see spam on rice (served sushi-style, and called musubi), spam hot plates, and of course, cans upon cans of the stuff. McDonalds offers Spam-based breakfasts, and most local restaurants have some sort of Spam delicacy on the menu.
And the locals lap this stuff up like it's going out of style. Shhh…don't tell them it already went out of style - decades ago..."
And if you really want to come away from this satisfied Google; 'SPAM Recipes'.
Hondas provided a most reliable railfanning vehicle for me for over 30 years, although the one pictured in my avatar finally died about 30 minutes after the picture was taken. At 120,000 miles and 22 years old (the last 12 as a back-up machine) it didn't owe me anything, and even had the courtesy to keep going until after I finished the railfanning for the day. A 15 year old BMW now does the sole honours, with 145,000 miles and counting. Just came home from following CP2816 as she did a weekend circle trip to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. I've yet to encounter anyone railfanning on a hog, but there probably is someone out there.

Well, first off, let me say that I'm not making the comparison to railfanning, but to railroaders both past and present. I've been one for fifteen years so far. As for "my" ("your" is a possessive pronoun; "you're" is a contraction) getting worked up over nothing, this is heritage that I can and do legitimately lay claim to. OTOH, I see railfans and Harley owners alike that equally foam over their respective interest/hobby. To each their own, I suppose. My interest also earns me a pretty good living and was instrumental in building this nation and being an integral part of its history and economy. But at the end of the day, it's a job that I'm thankful to have a break from. As for hobbies, I'm gonna go hunt Yankees this weekend with a very large cannon (see my avatar).
So, who's going to be the first to go up to a biker riding a Harley and call him a hogger?
Since Hoover vacuums were mentioned, a bit of trivia. For a few years, the Hoover company was owned by a holding company, Chicago Pacific Corporation. Eventually, the holding company was acquired by Maytag, who was interested in the appliance companys Chicago Pacific held.
Chicago Pacific had once been in the railroad business. It was the reorganized successor to the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific RR.
Jeff
If I recall correctly, the Rock Island's trustee did such a good job of selling off the assets that he was able to pay off the creditors and the bankruptcy proceeding was terminated without a reorganization, just a change of name.

Is it legal to hunt Yankees in NY? Sounds like fun!
