The car actually has an interesting history. It was one of three RPO cars operated by the Indiana Railroad (the interurban, not the current short line with the same name), and was originally built for the Indiana Service Corporation (an IRR predecessor). Following IRR's demise, I believe that South Shore acquired all three of the RPOs. One was turned into the line car. The other two were used as express trailers towed behind passenger trains
The car is CSS&SB line car 1100; it's at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union. Plans are to restore it as a working line car.
