I have seen a box car on a lot of excursion trips with either the Union Pacific 3985 or 844. I know that these excursion trains usually include a tool car but I thought that was baggage car # 6334 "Art Lockman," and usually the two cars are still seen together in the consist? I just wanted to know what the box car is used for?
From the "Heritage Fleet" Brown Book published by the Union Pacific Steam Shop:
UPP #9336 was originally built as a high speed express boxcar to carry mail and express merchandise on high speed passenger trains. It was renumbered UP #24336 and transferred to freight service in 1968.
It was assigned to the Heritage Fleet in 1988 and renumbered to UPP #9336 in 2003. It carries steam locomotive spare parts, oversize supplies and steps used to allow visitors to see inside the cabs of No. 844 and No. 3985
It carries quick fix parts for the 844, or the 4449

I wonder if those are the same cars that are used on the rotary snow plow train that is called out of Cheyenne during bad winters?
There was an article in TRAINS a few years back about modern rotary operations that included a short interview with Steve Lee ,who was still head of the UP steam program then. The piece explained that the Cheyenne based Steam Crew also operates the rotary train when called. He stated that several pieces of rolling stock used on the excurcion trains also are used in plow service, including crew dormitory cars and one of the tool cars. It's a very different service than UP's (former SP) rotary operations on Donner Pass, the train often covers much more territory and thus travels with a supply of spare parts and crew accomadations so it can operate self sufficently for a number of days in bad weather.

He probably meant 3985.
Not that it really matters any more.
