Anyone that thinks they can perform a restoration to operation on a budget is a fool.  Cosmetics can be done to a budget, operation requires fixing problems that only become known as the project progresses.  Fixing those problem are generally not small ticket items.

I can only wish that more people understood this.

"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

Give them a 'barn find' classic automobile that 'could' have a high value - if restored.  Then have them do a 1st class restoration on their 'original' budget.  If one can actually get the job done for 3 times the original budget it will be a major victory.  Until you undertake the work you have no idea of what the issues are and what the expenses are.

Yeah, but them selling tickets for it's first run last fall was kind of silly.  They were a wee bit optimistic themselves.

The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.

They were prognosticating on the basis of the cosmetics, not the mechanicals.

I think they still don't have the full $530K needed to finish but it sounds like they are fund raising for it.
