Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific R.I.P.

I have just read some very disturbing news regarding the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad (aka The Sugar Cane Train) on Maui, HI. Today, August 1, 2014 will be the last day of operation after 45 years. Apparently it was a financial decision made by the owners last month. Whenever I went to Maui I always made it a point to ride the train. My last visit was in the spring of 2013. By then the schedule had been reduced to weekdays and the ride was extremely rocky. I guess the economy has had a real impact on HI tourism. Walking around the nearby shopping district of Lahaina I was dismayed to see so many boarded up stores. I wonder what will become of the engines and rolling stock not to mention the Lahaina station and turntable.

Well dang, that's another one I missed!  

I suppose if the locomotives and rolling stock are in good shape they'll find a home somewhere.

I road that train with my wife in early February last year.  I didn't get a sense that they were slipping to trouble, but I may not have been paying attention.  Sorry to see it stop.

For the equipment, there is the Oahu Railway and Land Co. museum, same gauge and relatively close by. Sad to see them go!
