Los Angles Union Station 75th year
Posted by eagle1030 on Sunday, July 28, 2013 7:20 PM

I thought of this while reading the railfair thread (btw, awesome idea).

Anyone old enough (and those too young but with youtube access) remembers the grand sight of 4449 and 844 pulling in side by side to LAUPT in 1989 for its 50th and then racing up Cajon Pass.  UP's E9s 951, 949, and 963B, SP E9 6051, and ATSF F7 347C were also present.  Probably one of the best preservation events of the 20th century, topped only by Railfair 99.

2014 will be 75 years.  Is anything like this in the works?  I doubt 4449's rebuild will be over, but 3751 should be able to come to this one.  The UP E9s are always ready, as is 844.  I think the Cal. Railroad Museum would let 6051 and 347C head down for the day.  Maybe SP 2472 could pinch-hit for 4449.

I sure do remember the "race" up Cajon Pass!  That was 25 years ago?????

Was that also when they re-created the classic lineup of "covered wagons" (E and F units); AT&SF, UP, and SP?

However, I recall only one UP E unit being there.

Hopefully there will be another celebration for the 75th anniversary, thanks for posting this.
