Southern Steam Restoration
Posted by streetcaroperator on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 5:31 PM

I am VERY glad to see that Norfolk Southern is once again preparing to do steam excursions.  These wonderful steam giants help to build this great nation.  They helped us win two world wars and have kindled a love affair of railroading in many youth through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  I hope the spirit is kept alive in the twenty- first century also.

With the focus on getting America away from the dependence on foreign oil, I would really love to see a new interest in the technology of the ACE 3000 (new steam) both for freight and passenger service.  This should be done in conjunction with expanding the use of electric locomotives also.

New steam?  Well, I don't think there's anyone of us out here who wouldn't like to see it happen, or who doesn't harbor a sneaking, secret wish to see it happen,  BUT,  it would entail  rebuilding a whole industry from scratch that was dismantled over 50  years ago.  Not very likely.  I can see massive electrification before a return to steam.  Now, if they make those electrics look like GG-1's.......
