The routing out of Schenectady was D&H, then NYC to Chicago, then C&NW to Council Bluffs, then a UP switcher move across to Omaha. If I recall correctly there was at least one published story by a rider/maintainer on one of these moves. I would suspect they moved dead-in-train, not right behind the road power but several cars back, and that the usual procedure of keeping them off 'home rails' as long as possible for tax purposes a la ATSF was followed.
There were serious restrictions on photography of 'strategic assets' in wartime, but I'm sure there are pictures of these moves in the photo-trading community.
