CPR G5 Pacifics
Posted by Moonie on Thursday, August 27, 2009 9:56 PM

Last week I took my two sons to SteamTown and we were delighted to see 2317 in action. While there we noticed that none of the ex CPR G5's that Nelson collected are there, though I believe that one of the isolated tenders may be from a G5. While I know that 1201, is safely protected at the museum in Ottawa, and both 1278 and 1293 are part of the Ohio Central collection does anyone out there know the location and status of 1238, 1246 and 1286? My curiosity about SteamTown caused me to dig out the March '79 issue of Railfan which included Jim Boyd's fabulous article on the preserved G5's, all of which were in operating condition at the time. Is it possible that only No. 1293, of what has to be the best preserved class of locomotive is operational today?

1293 is indeed the only operating G5.  38 and 86 are being stored in VA somewhere.  46 is apparently on display in a park in CT.  1278 of course suffered the crown sheet failure.  1201--the only G5 still at home--is in the shop in Ottawa, waiting for someone with the time and resources to get her going again.
