Pennsylvania K4s Pacifics
Posted by Moonie on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 11:37 AM

Could someone please explain the numbering system of Pennsy's famed K4s Pacifics? I have read numerous references over the years but I do not recall seeing a complete listing of numberings (renumberings?), etc.

Many thanks.

P.S. What's the latest on 1361?

PRR used to assign each engine terminal a block of numbers.Engines from that terminal would be assigned one of those numbers with each class recieving numbers from within that group. Therefore,a K4 assigned to Northumberland, would get a number from the Northumberland pool, which would be far drifferent from a K4 assigned to Fort Wayne.Confused? That's probably why PRR got rid of that system.

You might get more answers if you posted your question in the "Prototype information for modelers" sub forum under Model Railroader Magazine's set of forums.   Some of those guys really know their stuff.

As for the 1361, the last I heard was that work was stopped about three years back due to a plethora of issues.  So to the best of my knowledge, she is sitting in pieces at Steamtown going nowhere fast.
