Cheyenne Frontier Days Train and U.P. Yard
Posted by 081552 on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 7:23 PM

On July 19th I rode the Cheyenne Frontier Days Train behind 844 for the first time. What a class act by U.P. and all of the others involved with the trip!

While waiting for the return trip I noticed all sorts of interesting stuff in the Cheyenne yard. Can anyone provide some detail on the following?

I saw several cabooses from Rock Island (freshly painted), CNW, SP, and others.

Heavy-weight Southern Pacific business car in Daylight colors.

Various E units including some CNW units.

Thanks for any comments. I'll post photos later.

Re: UP "Heritage" Equipt at Cheyenne

I was "on the ground" chasing the 844 and CFD train between Denver and Cheyenne on the 19th, and Uncle Pete allowed access into the yard - as long as no one was stupid.  Here's what I saw / photographed (without wandering too deep into the complex and screwing this up for everyone!)  I was on the south side of the turntable, and west of the Steam shops building:

CABEESE:

DRGW extended vision caboose DRGW 01524

UP Caboose 25740 (Center cupola - "P" for Pool service)

UP Caboose 25707 (Center cupola - "P" for Pool service)

CNW Caboose Bay-window #11111  (chained down on top of MP flat 15379) caboose had no trucks...

Rock Island Bay-Window Caboose 17201 [on OTTX 9277-- flatcar] again, without trucks...  Bright, beautiful paint - but without any other "normal" stencils, etc., save the RI and 17021.

CNW Bay-Window Caboose 11047 - again chained onto a flatcar, but with trucks... (although not under the caboose).  The 11047 has a fair amount of graffiti on its lower flanks.

There were also a couple of what I believe are DRGW cabeese that were mostly black with some orange showing through.  I am not a DRGW student, but it seems to me that they painted their cabeese black at one point...  These two seem to be in good shape, but thwy are without any markings other than the lube stencils.

LOCOMOTIVES:

CNW F7A #401 (faded CNW paint), along with a CNW B-unit - UP has F7Bs 315 / 410 and 411 - but I could not see a number on this one.   They also have another F7A (#400), but only the #401 was visible.  The B-unit with the 401 was in very faded Amtrak paint - but it was originally a CNW unit.

UPY 1062:  ex-SP SW1500 - looking pretty forlorn and battered - typical appearance for SP equipment - at least here in the LA area toward the end...

I could see a tiny bit of their shop-switcher (which is itself historical): SW10 1234, but could not get a clear shot of it.   They were using the 6936 as a switcher to turn the 844, the cistern (UPP 814), and the "Art Lockman".

UP's E9As (951 and 949).  I did not see the 963 (E9B), but I did see an un-numbered E9B that had not been painted and restored - so that must have been the 966B.

I also did not see the 3042 (SD40X), or the SP SD-7 1518 or their DRGW F7(?)B 5763 (which I knew that they have), nor the "Daylight" Biz car (which I did not know that they have).  They also have several old UP passenger cars (mostly baggage and similar - one is a REA car) in this area - in various stages of restoration.

I have photos of all of this if you'd like - and I wouldn't mind seeing the photos of what you saw from the north side.
