4449 in Portland

Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation (ORHF) ran their Holiday Express last weekend. We drove up from Los Angeles to ride the train Saturday night. Shown below are some photos from the ride.

I think this is one of the great unknown train rides. Last year we rode behind SP&S 700 and this year it was SP 4449. The ride is beautiful along the Willamette River in the afternoon. It's not a high-speed run but you get to ride behind heavy-duty steam in a holiday setting.

One of the cars on the train is an SP observation car. When I rode the Southern Pacific in the 60s to see my grandmother I always looked at the car and asked my mom why we couldn't ride it. Now I can!

Hi, they ran the excursions this weekend also. I live in the Portland area, and today was an all train day for me. Started off by seeing the Legends of Steam, part 2, this was footage of the 844/4449 double header to Seattle, at a local theater, then out to Aloha, OR to visit the combined TCA and TTOS club's open house and swap meet. My next stop was to see, and Hopefully ride the 4449 excursion. Train sold out the day before, no tickets available, at first I thought BUMMER, but I didn't know that they were also offering SPEEDER rides, and only $5.00. Took a speeder ride was a LOT of FUN. At the end of the speeder ride, I ran into a member from the local HO club that I am in, I knew but had forgotten that Rick has a speeder, so I got a second longer ride in the opposite direction in, WAY COOL, even more FUN with a Friend running it. It was a Great Day, but I still don't have my tree done, but I did have my Priorities right.
