Thanks for the info everyone. Folkston was worth the trip, even more so was going the extra 30 miles to Waycross, GA. CSX's Rice Yard is huge and the town has tracks running out in all directions. There is also a scrapping business near Rice Yard with lots of older diesel locomotives, lots of end-cabs made for some variety. Many of the locomotives are painted in colors long retired, I particuarlly liked the GP in Illinois Central Gulf white and orange.
Folkston is a must see. Economy's got the traffic down but still busy and a fantastic viewing area. There's usually a couple to half dozen railfans gathered so it's fun even without trains going by. If hunger strikes, do look at the Okefenokee Restaurant. It has a buffet at both lunch and dinner that will satisfy for little $.
Folkston is always worth a visit.
Yes it is definitely worth a few hours. Be prepared for an afternoon lull.
I'll be taking my first trip to Florida in a few weeks and am looking for some advice on where to go. I'll start in Orlando, head over to the I-95 corridor and then north. Is Folkston, GA worth a trip? Any places I "must see" in that region?
I'd apprciate any and all help.
Thanks!
