I live in London, Ontario Canada. Here, we have two railroads serving our community, the Canadian Pacific, and the Canadian National Railroads. I live about three blocks from the Canadian Pacific yard, and have to say that it's rather interesting to note that during the daytime, it is busy around there, but not nearly as busy as the late night, early morning hours. I was wondering if anyone could possibly explain this phenomenon to me. Also, I remember a time when whistle signs were placed along the tracks both east and west of the yard. Now, there is "No Whistle" signs placed there. However, I get a chuckle once in a while in the middle of the night, when I hear a couple of short blasts of the horn. Brings back some old memories.

All I know is that when I'm sitting at trackside during the day NOTHING goes by. At night when I'm trying to sleep they pound past one after another. I've been told that maintenance crews work on track during the daylight hours so the trains are all held and then run through at night. Of course this refers to mainline traffic - don't know anything about work in the yards.
