I'm curious about the KCS's Roodhouse-KC line. I'm hoping to check it out someday, and I was wondering if someone could shed some light on when and what trains run on the line? I'm guessing it's probably not that busy, but I did find an intermodal train somewhere in IL, so I'm also guessing they at least have some trains going through in the daylight hours?
Brandon:
Are you thinking of the former MILW line from Roodhouse to KC? The KCS does not go north of KC. Maybe you saw KCS power on a run through train.

KCS power does run an inter-mobil through ILL, 2-3 times a week, on the old Vandalia line [PRR,CSX] from St Louis to Indy.

There are a pair of KCS-CSX run-thru Schneider intermodal trains that run between Marion, OH and Kansas City. There is also a pair of KC-East St. Louis manifest trains that run 2 times per week. Other traffic includes a local based in Roodhouse that works south, west, and east on different days (M-W-F to Springfield). There are also unit grain trains and empties that run from/to the large Bartlett Grain terminal in Jacksonville, IL on the old Jack Line.
Here is a link to a good list of 2016 KCS train symbols: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4046979
See the post by florida581. This guy always has good info on train ID's and operations.
Thanks for the information! Also, just went back and the intermodal I mentioned was an eastbound just west of Roodhouse. Four engines and a medium sized train.
