New member from Thailand!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 1:34 PM
Hi friends,

I am a new member to this railfan forum. I am a recent graduate student from SUNY Maritime College in New York and long time train lover from Thailand. My train spotting hobby has long been stalled even before I came from Thailand due to my busy studying and working. I took some train pictures when I visited home two years ago, and have some pictures my dad took for me when I was a child about twenty years ago. I will find a chance to scan all those pictures and post them somewhere (I do not know yet). So you guys can see what the GE, Alsthom, Krupp, Hanschel, Hitachi looks like. Or if anyone lives not far from me maybe we can meet and I will bring the photo albums to show you! I would appreciate if anyone can give me a suggestion about how to start train spotting in this country without any problem with security or making anyone paranoid. I live in Rockland County, NY, and have been to Iona Island near Bear Mountain Bridge sometimes. I can go anywhere and do anything I want in my country (I mean nobody talks about security over there.), but I do not know for sure if I will be asked or caught if I stop by near the rail track and take some pictures in America. Thanks a lot! Waiting for good recommendation. I am belong to another railfan site in Thailand. Unfortunately, it is only offer in Thai, but you can browse some pictures if you like. Just visit http://www.yimsiam.com/club/board/frames.asp?wbID=fanrotfaithai The right picture on the top of the page is a 2500 hp GEA No. 4540 imported in 1995. I do not know for sure where exactly in America this loco was made. Thanks again.

Yo! Brutha! All the script is in Thailannese! Anyway, mabey my trainzlater wasn't on. Thanks for the hyperlinks, that is the way to "connect", keep up the good work! Welcome to the Trains Forums, Welcome to the United States of America. There are loads of websites to all the info you can handle when you become bored, explore, check-out the links, and don't forget the train simulation websites. The 911 Tower Bombings brought out a new protective for the railroads in the United States, So use the properties alongside the railroad you wi***o observe, remembering that the roads wi***hat you check-in with them, before you take pictures, etc. They may not co-operate, however, you're there with a reason. The railroad police carry firearms, and powers of arrest. You seem to have a knowledge of how to post your pictures(Pics), so post them anywhere in these forums you wish, giving details, or publi***hem, is you have a story to tell, about your home roads. I hope this helps, and wish you luck with your endevers, God Bless You for being here. My uncle served at Utapou, SAC, Airforce Base, during the Vietnam Conflict. Enjoy Your Hobby! ACJ/ Allen.

Hey Karn!!! I am an American stuck here in Thailand. I was an railfan when I lived in NYC, but here, I kindof gave up on it, not too much to see. They just opened up the underground subway, and the skytrain has been around a few years - but I don't like them. Its hard to take pictures of them too. Someone comes to shoo you away. Not because of security - but because they think they are supposed to.

I keep hearing about more development of the intercity lines for passengers and freight - but you know - it is only talk here !

I registered on that site and will check it out when I have more time. I read Thai SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW !!!! and I don't have my dictionary with me!

Nice to hear from you darth bangkok. If you live in Thailand for a just few years, you will know very well it is just a talk like you said. There are a pile of new development projects around, especially in Bangkok, but because of the political instability and lack of capital, only few of them are carried out. Remember, there is supposed to be a sky train running overhead of tracks parallel to Vibhavadi-Rangsit Highway near the airport???

How long have you been living in Bangkok?

Karn, a big WELCOME from here in Chicago land. Was the school you graduated from in NY once "Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy", if so my father graduated from there just before WWII and then went in the US Navy afterwards.

In any event, we look forward to your contributions to this forum, and hope you enjoy ours as well.

hello karn...just returned from thailand...my wife and daughter are thai..i find the thai railways great and everytime i go to thailand i spend time at the stations..i took my father over this time and we all went up the rail line known as the death railway ..8 x hours round trip for $2.50 not bad value..i have tried a few times to meet railmodellers in thailand and the closest person i have found is a young man at nong nuk gardens at pattaya..a very large g scale railway..over here in australia we have no problem with security and can photograph trains any time..here in queensland i am blessed with the 3-6'' railway..not small..120,000,000 tonnes of coal a year and 2' narrow gauge suger cane railways...the only suggestion i can give you is to go with an american..find a friend who is large clean ,cut with a beer gut and a football shirt and you will blend into the crowd...best luck..peter
