Real News - from Nebraska!
Posted by Mookie on Friday, October 10, 2003 7:16 AM
No we aren't electing a new govenor!

But the two papers I read this morning both said that the Union Pacific is hiring workers for train crews!!!!!

They hired about 1000 conductors and engineers thru August and will do that many again by the end of the year! Up to 3000 could be hired next year! Now that's good news!

Layoffs were mostly management (I think most companies are a little top-heavy) but no editoralizing - and factors toward hiring were military service, retirement rates up and Family & Medical Leave Act!

So - .......my point is - come to Nebraska and work for UP - we need help with getting our taxes down - ahem, I mean, we have no mountains to climb to wear you out, no big oceans to drown in, we keep you in shape by raking leaves, mowing grass and shoveling snow and you will live a long time - or maybe it just seems that way!

you got some good news about trains? Get it on here! I thought that was a real bright spot in our two papers!

Besides, I am frivolous, like chocolate cake and have an empty attic! So what do you want for free?

Good news indeed for UP and for workers in Nebraska and migrants from other state who may wi***o capitalize on these jobs. I have a buddy, last name Zemenak, who owns the fourth largest ranch in the state. Haven't seen him in about 30 years. He's from the far western part of the state that wanted to break away from the rest of the state about 20 years ago. I don't know what became of that movement.

Trains had a good feature recently on a town in Nebraska. Forgot what it was, Platte or something.

Maybe your friend is a neighbor of Ted Turner. He owns a big chunk of NE.
North Platte is a rather large UP yard. Going to get there someday!

Hey, folks, as a UP employee I can tell you that my Sis (Mookie) is absolutely correct...they are hiring at North Platte.

Now, at the risk of ticking her off, I will mention that they're hiring in many other places, too, including West Colton, Phoenix, Las Vegas, various points in the Northwest, Utah, Colorado, Texas, and Louisiana. Nothing mentioned about points in Missouri, Arkansas, or Illinois.

Naw, you don't tick off the Mook - she just files her nails a little sharper, takes names and kicks butt later...

Anyway dear brother, as you must remember from our last family reunion, I still live in Nebraska, and it is my taxes I am trying to get lowered with an influx of new people they can steal, er... tax......to death!

Tell Mumzy hi and to write when she gets work.

Pardon me for the interuption your highness, but the mere fact that you cleaned the attic out yesterday, and it is full of nonsense again today, indicates that objects and thoughts are still able to enter the attic.
Congratualtions, your open minded!![8D][:D][:)]

As we zoomed across I-80 and US-30 last night (Pacific to Julesburg), Uncle Pete wasn't running much out there. Guess the yellow peril needs some fre***roops.
(Yes Mooks, we encroached on the great State of Nebraska once more!)

I can't speak for the operating [TY&E] side, but Uncle Pete has dumbsized to the point that some departments have gone from lean & mean to starving and stupid. The folks still there are "burning-out" at a frightening pace. (and there are no replacements being trained in the pipeline either, the future could be scary!)

VSMITH:

At least Dorothy & Toto can see trouble coming (and it's in the state due south of Huskerland). .......Shakers (earthquakes) happen without warning. I've been caught in a tunnel when the World Series '89 Quake hit and on the upper portion of a truss bridge (at Redondo Junction inspecting the pins after the 5.4 shaker) by an aftershock of the Northridge quake. I even got caught on the potty when one hit and could not figure out why the bowl water was sloshing around (Ride'em Pottyboy!)

Always found myself praying for magnitude 4.9 or below so that the darned dispatchers would not call because the whole railroad within 250 miles of the epicenter was at restricted speed until we (roadmasters and track supervisors) checked all the track and bridges.

In Denver, tornados do not set down until they get out on the prairie east of town. La Junta is in a river valley and they skip over. Except for hail and occasional heavy snow, we've got it pretty good. You can keep LA!

Gentlemen: We have tornados in parts of Nebraska. We have never had a tornado in Lincoln itself. Come to Lincoln and we can give you no tornados and high taxes. I had to live in Oklahoma for 9 mos to be in a tornado!

By the way - read in our paper this morning that some moron on a committee to decide if we should have a commuter train or buses from here to Omaha - said most of the population of Nebraska is in Lincoln and Omaha! I am going to go back to bed and cover up my head! I can't get through the week after that!

I almost said Lincoln and Ohaha have the densest population, but I think I would be killed by newly-sharpened claws for that one...speaking about Lincoln, anyway!

Sis, Mum says she's got a job, keeping us separated! We'll have to see if those meds can be adjusted.

See, we are related - this side of the family thinks they are the dense, too. Most of them are politicians. The rest are school administrators. But, if I move, who would be here to yell at them!

Isn't Mom great!

Unfortunately, they seem to have blown that one out of the water. Besides, they couldn't do a 'muter train unless they had billions and billions of dollars to fritter away and guess where they would get all that $?

From my wallet. If you don't like it there, you could always come to IN and pay for the Big Dig in Boston. (IN only gets about 89% of tax revenues back from the feds, so we end up paying for everybody else's pet [pork] projects)
