I have a question for all the southeastern railfans. What is your favorite railroad in the south? What is your favorite railroad photograph placed in the south? And what is you favorite place to railfan in the southeastern USA (popular or unpopular location!)?
The Southern Serves the South! And It’s Missed Everyday!
Charleston, SC along East Bay, north of Calhoun. There's a yard serviced by both NS and CSX.. And its not a long walk to the A Ravenal suspension bridge which offers views of the yard from above.. If the trains don't impress you the bridge and the view surely will..
Haven't been able to do much railfanning per se, but the favorite place I've been is the viewing platform in Folkston, GA. It has a roof, rocking chairs, a scanner and tons of trains. A close second would be within sight of CSX in Waycross, GA; no facilities for railfans, but if you hang around all day you can see pretty much anything. I would love to spend some time at the new viewing platform in Cordele, GA, or around NS's Brosnan Yard in Macon.
My favorite railroad is the old Seaboard Air Line. ACL and Southern both had superior routes and infrastructure, but Seaboard fought the good fight. It was the closest railroad to my hometown, and was the railroad through Tallahassee, my adopted home.
