How many here can remember all the way back to 1992 ? It was a time when the UPRR and CSX cooperated, to send #3985 all the way to the East, from Cheyenne ?

She was to pull, what was then billed, as the '50th' iteration, of Clinchfield Railroad's Santa Train..

Not only that, she was 'dressed' as a former Clinchfield RR, Challenger-type engine; enroute, she even got a CRR number#676, and a Clinchfield name on her tender....She then traveled to Kentucky and Tennessee to 'pull' the Santa Train'.

It was rumored, at the time, that the trip was done with the help of management teams from CSX, and UP, and a group of various railroad shippers in the area of eastern Tenn, and Kentucky(?)..

Not to mention, at about that same time frame(?); rumors were being heard of a pssible merger(?) Wishful thinking; we all know it never would happen.. Whistling

At any rate, it was one heck of a show, and memorable, at the very least.

It's my understanding that CSX has (or at least had) a great distaste for such movements these days. Which is why you don't see any of the historic steam locomotives moving via CSX.

Perhaps, at least in this case, someone at CSX saw the positive publicity this train gets as a plus, instead of a drain on the treasury.

At the time that UP 3985 masqueraded as Clinchfield 676 former UP Senior Executive Jerry Davis was a Senior Executive for CSX and he then later returned to UP.
