While surfing the'net; I found an 'unusual' rail fan's model of the EMD SD 70ACe. Which a student at Purdue Univ has 'kit-bashed'; as his way to ride to his classes...

So, call me crazy, but it is a pretty interesting story; certainly, railroad related, and as a member of the Purdue Railroad Club, Ramon Pardo, seem to qualify as not only a rail fan, but hobbiest oriented. My memory of Steve was his name tag reading "I am NOT STEVE LEE"
As a student at Purdue for a year and a half, I can attest to distances between campus residence dorms and the instructional facilities. Long walks in 1964-66. Doubt the distances are any shorter today.

looks like some days it's a GP70ACe.. Then other days an SD. A true converitable locomotive?
Now he needs to make another one with a small motor in it, MU them, and charge the electric one with the motorized one when the electric one gets low on juice.

My youngest son is in his senior year at Purdue and based on my wandering around the campus with him, the long walks are almost certainly longer than in your time there. He's now living in an apartment about 2-3 blocks up the hill from Triple X, so he's closer to the engineering part of campus than he would have been in a dorm.
One thing that brings a smile to my heart is seeing the house that was behind the Birney on page 136 of The Time of the Trolley is still there on State Street.

When I was there, McCutcheon Hall dormitory was known as H-4 - from Google Earth it still looks like it is dorm farthest from the educational buildings.
Guess I need to get on campus more often to see this. PArking and driving around campus has gotten more and more difficult over the years and hauling my wife in her wheelchair isn't so easy either. I would like tosee this rig though.

My younger so called today to wish me a happy birthday. I asked him about the locomotive longboard and he said he's met the guy - said that the guy realy had to lean into a turn to get the locomotive to turn.
Not sure about people longboarding at Purdue tomorrow with a forecast high of 44F.
You know, the thought just hit me.
Since the Purdue kids are called "The Boilermakers" I'm surprised he didn't build a steam-powered skateboard.

I mean, it's cute - but trying to get other people to pay for it? No thanks. Plus he acts like he is acting like it's something much greater than it is. I dunno. Seems overblown.
