Tahawus NY Line Sold to Rail Bike Operator
Posted by MidlandMike on Thursday, June 16, 2022 10:01 PM

The Tahawus extension line north of the North Creek branch (ex-D&H, ex-S&NC) has been sold to a rail bike operator Revolution Rail.  The extension to the titanium-iron mine was built during WWII as a war emergency.  The extension has been shut down for about 30 years.  The rail bike operator says he is also open to freight.  The sale was part of the Iowa Pacific bankruptcy.

Well that was interesting and weird at the same time. I can't see how they can afford to buy the line and pay for their investment.

All the world's upheaval might chage to availability of Titanium.  Anyone have any insight as to the longer term availability?

Not directly related to the purchase of the line, but I was up at the Lyon Mountain Railroad museum today and thought of an interesting personal study/YouTube documentary: Explaining why the D&H didn't connect the 15 miles between Tahawus and Lake Placid...

I obviously know the reasons (the high peaks lie in between) but it would be a fun study.

I bought a topo map of the High Peaks area when I hiked up Mt. Marcy about 20 years ago.  I looked on the map for such a rail route for a freelanced model RR, but as you say, it would have been a roller coaster.  I did notice there is a low divide between the headwaters of the Boreas and AuSable Rivers to connect those two branches, but it would just be a parallel line to the D&H mainline.

At one time (many moons ago) a line was proposed from Sackets Harbor to Saratoga, through the Adirondacks.  As I recall, the line dipped down toward Old Forge.

FYI - An outfit called "Seeker Enterprises" is attempting to do the same thing on the Arcata Branch on the north end of the NWP in Humboldt County in Northern, CA .... interesting that both are trying to avoid the NITU/CITU railbanking process with the trail factions and local government.
