S & Q symbols have zero priority. Some Zs are the same way. Z1,2 are now the hottest (former 8&9s w/UPS traffic) while a 3 (former 7) can be highlighted or treated like a nobody.

Not sure if there's a load differrence at least for Q, and Z's. As the service needed will depend on who rides what train. Though Q, S, or Z will also determine who gets out of the yard first...
How long you sit out on the main that's another story...
Around here how we tell them anymore is this way. If going westbound and they didn't combine it with another train then we know it's a Z train. If it's all JB Hunt and combined with another then it's a Q train. Anything else it's your everyday P and expect to wait 5 mins for the 15k to 17k feet to clear the crossing in town.
kdunlap2006Thanks for your response, and I apologize for the delay; however, I am not sure if the same thread mentions what would an intermodal be classified as if there is a mix between Q- and Z-type trains (e.g.: would a single train of 40% JB Hunt and 60% UPS/FedEx be a Z-type due to majority rule)? Just a thought... Kelly Dunlap

The Class 1 carriers change and refine their Operating Plans on a continuing basis as necessary to match their customers volumes and desires. The squeaking wheel tends to get the service they squeak about.
In addition to customer needs, Operating Plans also get changed to support major track work projects on the carrier's property. Major track work projects can have the track segments where the work is being done out of service for 12 hours a day and in some cases for a week or more.

Here's a thread along those lines from this forum, several years ago: https://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/p/205443/2247745.aspx

Dear fellow enthusiasts:
I wonder what container and/or trailers are found on P-, Q- and Z-type intermodals on BNSF. If I understand correctly, UPS and FedEx are primarily found on Z-type trains, while JB Hunt containers are on Q-type trains. I never see any P-type trains, and I know that S-type trains are all ISO containers. Please let me know if I missed anything else concerning BNSF's intermodals. Thank you.
