Union Pacific Jefferson City Sub
Posted by ronpio on Sunday, April 26, 2015 9:50 PM

I live in the st. louis region and frequent the many hot spots.   The one hot spot that seems to have slowed down is Union Pacific's Jeff City Sub.  Does anyone know why?   Less coal trains??

    Does anyone have a answer

Could be related to track maintenance.  The UP Sunset Route here in SE Arizona, which is double-track all the way from El Paso, TX to beyond Casa Grande, AZ, is undergoing extensive tie replacement on its traditional west-bound main, which shuts down that line daily.

Small World

Hi, Ron!

What cacole replied is most likely the situation.

Tehachapi in California (CA) and the Sunset Route in Arizona (AZ) are known to have had 12 hour windows in the past.  Even IF (“if”) the Sub you mentioned is not involved in some type of window, the next Sub over might have been, and a ripple effect takes place.

Dispatchers have been know you pull all their hair out trying to maneuver all the trains stacked up  though a territory before the next 12-hour window starts.  Well, maybe not that bad, but you know what I mean …

I found your topic more personal than most topics.  Forum contributor cacole, who replied to your inquiry,  I actually met and sat down with once for a long chat.  Cool guy!  Another gentleman I met at the same time now lives in Illinois.  My daughter now lives near you, Ron, and when visiting her I took the following photos which you might recognized as MetroLink in the St. Louis area.

Of course, Southern California has its own Metrolink … (and called such)

The Los Angeles Rams pro football team whom my wife and I used to have tickets for from time to time became the St. Louis Rams, which team my son-in-law and grandson from time to time also get tickets for.

Just thought I would have some fun with you because in some ways we live in a small world!

Take care,

K.P.

Local here (Although I haven't been trackside in weeks nor listened to the scanner.)  I haven't really noticed slowdown (again, haven't been trackside in a while).  If it is, I think it's MOW, although I don't think it's full-on tie replacement.  The Bagnell Branch had some work done on it a few months back, so maybe UP is doing some work around the sub.  I don't really know.  Checking the local railfan Yahoo group yielded nothing.  If you want a better answer, the local railfan group is named the Mid-Missouri Railfans and have both a Yahoo group and a Facebook page.

In other words, I have no clue if the train count is down or not.  Railfanning's a bit like fishing that way.  You might have great days of train after train.  You may also get days where you're lucky to see the Amtrak!

Oof.  Buying a Rams ticket is a good way to unhappily lose money.  Tell your son-in-law I feel for him.  I used to go to some, but between my lack of disposable income and the Rams' lack of talent has kept me away for a while.  Maybe I'll go to one next season.  Might be the last time I can.
