George had two loves:  freight cars, and the Union Pacific (not necessarily in that order).  I first became acquainted with, and corresponded with him, in connection with a 1970s series Railroad Car Journal, which dealt with freight cars and their history in a way not seen before.  He was the editor of the 1980 Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia; I met him at about that time, when Simmons-Boardman had a booth at one of the trade shows in Chicago (I met Robert G. Lewis at the same time).

At trainorders they're saying this is a different George Cockle. Mr Bromley said it was George R Cockle that did the UP books, and the obit was for George M Cockle.
