Anyone know what's happening with the Railroad.net site forums?
Posted by chutton01 on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 9:04 AM

Since they are more prototype oriented than model oriented, I figured this question would fit best here - but anyway their forums have been down at least since the weekend - the "SQL Error" page seems to indicate a database issue, but you never know.
Their front page is still up, but hasn't really been updated since mid-2013, so that's no help.

Thanks

Just a guess -

The host of their site made software changes and they haven't updated their forum software to match the host changes.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I used to participate quite heavily at railroad.net, but found the folks here to be much pleasanter, and extremely attractive too. I probably posted there once in the last year, as usual making shameless plugs for people to come out on my sailboat and enjoy the riverview of NJT's Riverline, Delair Bridge, PATCO Ben Franklin Bridge, freight switching at the Gloucester NJ waterfront, and Northeast Corridor at Claymont.

Is this rr.net problem perhaps an attempt to keep me from being able to solicit sailboat crew now that it's getting close to the time I'll launch my boat for the upcoming season?

By the way, I'm planning for the first time to cruise to Cape May, which means if I do it alone I'll subject you to my now well known shaky cam videos. And you though Cajon Summit's video links were a problem.

Obviously down for maintenance.

I participate in the Pan Am Railway forum, especially as Amtrak is now running again through Northampton, Ma with a loading platform next to the former Union Station.

I ride a rail trail right next to the mainline.

NEVER say "Obviously" where Railroad.net is concerned. NEVER!
That said, it would have been nice if they used their front-page to announce "Maintenance to be done" etc. Instead, they are still stuck in mid-2013.

But wait, they do have a FaceBook page...which is also pretty dusty. There are several recent posts on FB from rr.net members asking the same thing I did in this post, and also counting off the days down (4 so far). No real info, though - the consensus such as it is, is that somebody is asleep at the switch at RR.net after it suffered a crash.

For all it's faults, Railroad.net is a pretty useful forum - it mostly deals with prototype info, not models (that's relegated to one somewhat active forum - no threat to Trains.com), and most activity falls within the North East/Mid Atlantic/Mid West region and passenger - Amtrak/Commuter/Transit) forums. There are lots of forums, a number very inactive even after they pruned some a few years back.  Maybe they should prune even more, and have Railpace (which doesn't seem to have a message board) take over the remaining forums! Big Smile

Gardendance, I rather hope that the Railroad.net crash is not a gigantic interconnected conspiracy to deny people boat rides on your yacht...

I think there's a conspiracy to replace our Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil with tinfoil, thus denying us the CIA survelience beam avoidance benefit we get from flexible strength due to oven tempering.

oops, I meant "theyres".

Yeah, my life was in a turmoil for at least sixty seconds because they never told anyone about going down.

But then, it could have been out of their control.

Has railroad.net ever gone a full fortnight without being down?  I post there sometimes (rarely anymore) under a different username than here.  That site is like a trip back to 2002 or something.  Kind of charming in some ways.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

If you want something really Dilbertly anachronistic, my condo management makes us phone their answering service, who then email the office, but they refuse to give us the email address.

And while composing this I got 2 phone messages asking me to phone businesses to whom I had sent emails. I replied with emails asking them what they need me to tell them that I didn't already put in the emails.

Yay, indeed it is.

They must have got new a new batch of hamsters to power the servers. Perhaps they even upgraded to guinea pigs.
