It has always been to me kinda like Morse code and Telex Machines--brief and more or less to the point. Now to sit down and compose a formal letter using the "Chicago Manual of Style" now thats a art and becoming a lost one at that too. Yes, 'Style' changes depending on the media being use to commumicate and the familiarity of the reader with the writer and the subject, but if what is written, whether it is on paper or on the internet; be it snail-mail paper letter, e-mail, blog, or forum, if the reader does not understand what was written, then no communication took place, formal or otherwise, and the time spent writing it, as well as reading it, was wasted.
Better to conform to some sort of style that many understand, than to be a lazy poof and expect to be understood by the reader unraveling the writing.

I miss the more formal style of written communication as it reflected a higher level of competence and professionalism. A nicely crafted letter on quality paper, with a formal salutation, paragraphs, and no abbreviations gave the reader a good impression of the sender apart from the message conveyed.
In any event, it is the author's burden to be understood, not the recipient's burden to understand. Yes, one would expect some good will and effort put in on both sides of the exchange, but....
Anything written in haste will not be read with pleasure.
