It is funny how money can change things, I've been saying for the last few years the brain dead politicians of Kingston N.Y. should visit Jim Thorpe, PA to see how it's done. They have a very successful tourist Railroad (the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad). Sharing the corridor with a popular hiking/biking trail, and guess what many of the tourist enjoy doing both attractions. The railroad and the trails work to complement each other, along with the shops, great eating establishements, river rafting, and varoius interesting historic sites. It has turned a dying coal town into a thriving community with tourists visiting from all over the world. Plus the tracks are used for freight (RBMN, NS, CP) keeping trucks off the local roads.

I work in retail. Christmas is actually Chri$tma$. Same thing with the Catskill Mt Rwy. None of the council cares about the train, history, etc. It is all about $$. How can you tell when you are in a politicians' bathroom? Two mirrors--one for each face.

Well, the ray of hope just got brighter. The Ulster County executive has unveiled a new trail plan that allows at least part of the railroad in Kingston open.

I was trawling through my Facebook newsfeed today when I came upon this story: http://hudsonvalley.twcnews.com/content/news/786958/city-council-to-review-county-s-proposal-to-remove-the-catskill-mountain-train-tracks/.

It seems that the city of Kingston, which was once gung ho over Ulster County's plan to rip up the tracks and build a trail may be singing a different tune. This comes after several special events hosted by the railroad have brought large crowds into Kingston businesses. One can only hope.
