Ironically, this near miss was during a media event about railroad safety.  There's a reason they put the yellow stripe and bumps down on the passenger platform.

Probably not, but I'd suppose the Senator's in what they call a "safe seat" anyway.  He could probably strangle his own mother and get re-elected.
