Posted by willy6 on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 8:55 PM
i know EMD a a division of GENERAL MOTORS. GM makes diesel engines. my question is,who makes the the diesel engine for the GE locomotives. because as far as i know, GE is big into electrical products.

GE makes its own prime mover diesel engines under its own name at its Grove City, Pennsylvania, plant.

GE is a huge, multi-billion dollar, global corporation into everything from railroad locomotive leasing to leading-edge medical equipment.

As many of the railroaders in the forums have said . . . GE should have stuck to making toasters.

I had a GE toaster once - the handle quit going up and down, so I used a small hammer to make it move. Wonder if they have to do that to the engines, too?

In all fairness, most of the major diesel locomotive builders got into engine design by buying an existing diesel engine builder: EMD bought Winton, Alco bought McIntosh & Seymour, GE bought Cooper-Bessemer, Baldwin bought De La Vergne and Lima bought Hamilton. After the initial purchase, the diesel engine divisions continued their design work under the parent company.

In ten years all the new units will be GEMD, with all train controls powered by a Windows NT workstation and the only engineers will be Certified Microsoft System Engineers. Whenever they try to use the bell, horn and ditch lights at the same time the crews will be informed that they have performed an illegal operation and the system is shutting down. [xx(]

Some of them do[:)]

Those that are afterburner equipped for the pointy nosed fast movers (F14s, F18s etc) do on purpose.........the rest of them only when they eat something that disagrees with them.....birds or flightless fowl (mudchickens), toast, nuts and bolts, up to no good felines, etc.......

Actually GM bought Winton and merged it with EMC in 1930. EMD was not created until 1941.

G.E. has never made anything that was good . the ac6000 you speak of is junk. and alco well you see where it is. EMD is the best engine made. and it dont matter what make either. time will tell but emd will be here and ge ............. well the only thing that keeps them in the running is price . and the bean counters are finally getting the message you get what you pay for.

Well, this old General Electric radio has but one speaker... The sound that comes out of that one speaker is better than the one in an old Zenith and the many in a new laptop!
