In some cases a model train can be very convincing. In the 1986 movie, "Tough Guys", near the end of the film SP Daylight GS-4 4449 is supposedly run off the end the track and into the Mexican desert. There was an article in an issue of Railfan & Railroad that talked about how they did the filming and for that scene they used a live steam model. It was very real looking and could have fooled a lot of railfans.
