This morning while leaving from work I noticed a train car. It was a very long flat car and it had two hoods on it like a giant coil car used to haul steel.It had up markings on them.Is it used to haul steel??Sorry I had my camera but no pics because its dark when I go and leave from work now.[:(!]

I think you were just missing a "s".

I saw an NS coil car that was very bizarre on the CP line in Bensenville, IL the other day and wondered if you knew anything about it or had seen one. I took a photo ( I think) but have not developed the film. Anyway, I thought it had a single hood with a misile-like shape. I thought this might be an aerodynamic thing but is was weird. But maybe I just had a bad cheeseburger. If I find the pic I'll post it.

Believe it or not, those UP 210000-series coil cars were rebuilt from bulkhead flat cars over the past several years. The covers, of course, are new.

Joe - saw something like this awhile back coming through Lincoln. Only it had two "lids" per flat car. We figured it was a coil car and the forum affirmed it. Our coil parts didn't have identifying names on them - at least not on our side. Interesting!

Well, shah as my daughter would say.....if it's a coil car then the file suffix should be .shtml ... it is sheet metal we're talking about

UP also home shop built a few coil cars from older plain flat cars, they didnt even bother to cut of the side stake pockets.
Just formed up a pair of hoods to fit, painted the whole shooting match gray, and put them in service.
