Where I live there is a river behind me, and the rail line crosses the river, maybe a third of a mile away, so the river channel tends to act as a sound guide. ,This is at a point where the line is just starting to get into the thick of town, and you can hear the TC trains nursing those brakes on constantly, on the inbounds
