tin plating was used on toy trains back in the early century.thus the name tinplate.some are rare and very collectable[:)]

Actually, the term "tinplate" has come to mean all trains that are not scale models, such as Lionel, etc. even though they are mainly made out of plastic now. So, the term "tinplater" refers to anyone who collects or operates trains such as these, which I do.

I have an HO layout, about 4x8, and old N gauge layout from when I was a kid, and my dads American Flyer 0-27 stuff. The HO is the only one that has been worked on recently. My nephew and I work on it when we can in the winter. But it is hard to find time with his schoolwork, and his computer games. He tells me that when the snow flies for the first time on a weekend that we will work on it. Probably won't happen. But there is always a chance to rekindle his interest. It's nothing too special, just a few loops and some buildings. But he has fun with the scenery.
